Power usage effectiveness is a metric used to determine the energy efficiency of a data centre. PUE is determined by dividing the amount of power entering a data centre by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it. PUE is therefore expressed as a ratio, with overall efficiency improving as the quotient decreases toward 1.
PUE was created by members of the Green Grid, an industry group focused on data centre energy efficiency.
The industry average PUE rating is over 2. So for every 1Kw of power used to run the IT equipment, another 1Kw is used to run the infrastructure. Custodian has built a unique, highly efficient cooling infrastructure that gives a PUE of around 1.2 - using 5 times less power to run the infrastructure than the average data centre.
